When is actually the best time to get married?

When people think of Greece, they often automatically think of peak summer — July, August, high temperatures and full holiday season.

But the hottest and busiest part of summer is not necessarily the best time for the wedding itself.

Based on our experience at ELEMENTS COMPANY, there are two periods we particularly recommend for weddings in Crete:

the second half of May through the end of June

and

the second half of September through the first half of October.

Both give you a very good chance of beautiful weather while avoiding some of the biggest disadvantages of July and August — extreme heat, larger crowds and peak-season prices.

Quick answer: When do we recommend getting married in Crete?

Our favourite periods are:

• mid-May through the end of June – warm but generally comfortable weather, a green island, long days and more stable conditions

• mid-September through the first half of October – beautifully warm sea, fewer tourists, a calmer atmosphere and still very pleasant weather

July and August are absolutely possible, but because of the heat, peak tourist season and higher prices, they would not normally be our first recommendation.

First, an important point: the wedding season in Crete runs from April to October

Crete is a highly seasonal destination.

For a classic destination wedding by the sea, we generally consider the season to run from approximately the beginning of April until the end of October.

Outside these months, it is not only the weather that changes.

The way the whole island operates changes too.

From November through March:

• flight connections are significantly more limited

• many seasonal hotels and villas are closed

• a number of restaurants, beach bars and wedding venues do not operate

• there is a smaller choice of activities and supporting services

• outdoor plans become much more dependent on the weather

You can absolutely organise a wedding in Crete during winter, but it becomes a different type of event.

If you are imagining a classic destination wedding abroad combined with a few days by the sea, activities for your guests and time to enjoy the island, we recommend staying within the April-to-October season.

And even within that season, some periods work better than others.

Mid-May to the end of June: our first recommendation

This is one of the most beautiful times of the year.

From the second half of May onwards, the weather is generally much more stable, but the island has not yet reached the intense heat of peak summer.

It is warm enough to enjoy an outdoor wedding without everyone spending the entire evening searching for the nearest air-conditioned room.

Crete also looks completely different in spring compared with the middle of summer.

After winter, the island is:

• green

• fresh

• full of vegetation

• pleasant for walks and excursions

• ideal for couples and guests who also want to experience nature

As summer progresses, the landscape gradually becomes drier and the character of the island changes.

So if you want to combine your wedding with hiking, excursions, nature or a few days exploring Crete, late May and June are an excellent choice.

What about April and early May?

This is where the weather becomes more of a gamble.

You might get a beautiful sunny day with temperatures around 25–26°C.

But you could also get rain, storms or a few cooler days.

That does not mean a wedding in April or early May is impossible.

It is not.

For an outdoor wedding, however, we would consider the weather risk higher and would definitely want a solid Plan B.

From the second half of May onwards, conditions are generally much more reliable based on our experience.

July and August: possible, but not our first choice

July and August are peak tourist season in Crete.

And that means three things:

it is hot, it is busy and it is more expensive.

The heat affects the entire wedding day

If you are planning a ceremony on the beach or somewhere without shade, high temperatures can become uncomfortable not only for the couple but also for the guests.

A wedding should be an experience.

Not a test of who can stand in formalwear under direct Mediterranean sun for the longest.

If July or August is the only realistic option — because of school holidays, work commitments or guest availability — a beautiful wedding can absolutely still be organised.

The programme simply needs to work with the weather.

We usually recommend:

• minimising unnecessary transfers

• avoiding long periods in direct sunlight

• scheduling the ceremony for later in the afternoon

• providing enough shade and water

• considering a venue at a higher elevation, where the air can feel more comfortable

A ceremony location in the hills or mountains with a sea view and a pleasant breeze can work beautifully during the hottest months.

Peak season also means more people

July and August also bring:

• busier beaches

• fuller restaurants

• higher demand for accommodation

• less flexibility with reservations

• popular venues and services booking out earlier

The more specific your vision is — a particular villa, venue or restaurant — the further in advance you should book.

And expect a higher budget

Peak season also means higher prices, particularly for accommodation and other tourism-related services.

So unless you have a specific reason to choose July or August, June or September can often offer a better balance between weather, experience and overall cost.

Mid-September to the first half of October: our second favourite period

If you want to experience Crete in a calmer mood, we really like this part of the year.

Peak tourist season is gradually ending.

Visitors start leaving, students return to school and the whole island begins to slow down.

There are fewer people around and the atmosphere becomes noticeably more relaxed.

For couples who want to combine their wedding in Crete with a few days of genuine downtime, we think this is one of the best periods of the year.

One major advantage of autumn: beautifully warm sea

In spring, the air can already be lovely while the sea is still relatively cool after winter.

Autumn is the opposite.

The sea has had the whole summer to warm up.

By the second half of September, the water can be so warm that for some people it barely feels refreshing.

If you want to combine your destination wedding with:

• swimming

• a boat trip

• a beach day

• several days by the sea

September is a particularly strong choice.

Autumn also offers a different kind of guest experience

There is another reason we like this season.

A wedding can be combined with local agricultural and food traditions happening around the island.

Depending on the exact date and producer, experiences might include:

• grape harvesting

• winemaking

• traditional raki production

• visits to local farms and producers

• seasonal food experiences

• activities connected with olives and other local products

This can work beautifully as a guest activity the day before or after the wedding.

Instead of another standard tourist excursion, your guests get to experience something connected to real life in Crete.

What about the second half of October?

This is when the weather starts becoming less predictable.

The first half of October can still be beautiful and very pleasant.

But the closer you get to the end of the month, the greater the chance of rain and more changeable conditions.

As with April, this does not mean a wedding is impossible.

It simply means we would plan with a little more caution and make sure there is a strong alternative if the weather changes.

Can it rain on your wedding day in Crete?

Of course.

Weather is nature, and there is never a 100% guarantee.

However, based on our experience so far, during the periods we recommend most — from the second half of May through June and from the second half of September through the first half of October — we have not yet had to move or cancel a wedding because of rain.

We see a greater risk of changeable weather mainly:

• in April

• in early May

• from the second half of October onwards

We always monitor the weather before the wedding and can adapt parts of the programme if needed.

What about wind?

Crete is an island, so yes — it can be windy.

For weddings by the sea, this is something we already consider during the planning process.

Wind does not usually mean that the ceremony needs to be cancelled.

It may simply mean:

• changing the orientation of the ceremony

• adjusting the placement of decorations

• using lightweight decorative elements differently

• positioning the ceremony so the wind is more comfortable for guests

With a destination wedding, the goal is to work with the environment rather than fight against it.

What is the best time of day for a wedding ceremony in Crete?

For outdoor weddings in Crete, we usually recommend the late afternoon.

Ideally, the ceremony should begin approximately two hours before sunset.

During the main wedding season, this often falls somewhere around 6 PM, although the exact timing naturally depends on the date and location.

A later ceremony has several advantages:

• temperatures are more comfortable

• the sun is less harsh

• guests are less likely to overheat

• the light is much better for photography

• the ceremony naturally flows into sunset and the evening celebration

Particularly during the warmer months, we would generally avoid an outdoor seaside ceremony in the middle of the day.

So which period should you choose?

It depends on what matters most to you.

Want the best overall balance?

The second half of May, June, the second half of September or the first half of October.

Want green landscapes and beautiful nature?

Late May and June.

Want the warmest sea?

September and early October.

Want fewer tourists and a calmer island?

The second half of September through the first half of October.

Need to get married during the school holidays?

July or August can work, but we recommend adapting the venue, ceremony time and overall programme to the heat and booking well in advance.

Want to reduce the risk of unstable weather?

We would be more cautious with April, early May and late October.

Want the full destination-wedding experience in Crete?

We would stay within the April-to-October season, when the island operates in full seasonal mode and you have the widest choice of accommodation, restaurants, wedding venues and guest activities.
